Saving changes to .fla file?

Hi all,

I hope someone can help.

I'm trying to make changes to a flash program and I'm pretty new to this.  There is an .fla file, a .swf file and an .exe.  I changed the .fla file, exported a new .swf file, but the changes I made in the code have not been effected.  Can someone please tell me what I have to do to get the .exe to call the right file?
